“An investment in travel is an investment in yourself.”
They say traveling is one of, if not the most amazing and satisfying thing a person can do in their lifetime. The thrill of adventuring to places we have yet to see can bring out our most authentic happiness. This is a story of a family who travel the world together and want to inspire everyone to do the same.
The Smiths are a family of five from Melbourne Australia. They are firm believers that they are capable of anything, and being able to travel assures them of that. “Travel allows us to challenge ourselves, push ourselves and prove that we are capable of anything if we just try. We travel with our kids aged 4, 7 and 10, including our eldest, Cooper, who uses a wheelchair while we explore,” they shared.
The Boomcast team had the pleasure to speak with Bron from the Smith Family and asked her some questions about their incredible travel experiences:
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE YOU’VE TRAVELED WITH YOUR FAMILY, AND WHY?
“Our favorite place to travel has been Cambodia. We have a special connection with that country and it offers families and travelers so much variety. There is the city and river, the temples and history and the laid back beach atmosphere.”
WHERE DID YOUR FIND THE HAPPIEST PEOPLE IN YOUR TRAVELS?
“South East Asia is where we spend most of our travel time. Simple lives with less possessions and a great love of family.”
MANY PEOPLE WITH VARYING DISABILITIES RULE OUT TRAVELING AS A POSSIBILITY, WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR THEM?
“It really depends on your disability to how easy it will be to travel and how far you can go. Traveling isn’t just about jumping on a plane, it can be about exploring a new town an hour drive away too. I would always start with seeing what travel insurance I could get and go from there.”
HOW DID YOUR SON WITH A DISABILITY BENEFIT AND GROW FROM THESE TRAVELS?
“Cooper loves to travel. He is his best self when exploring and trying new things. He learns about different cultures, foods, people and he shows others that he’s willing to give anything a try.”
WHAT ARE THE HARDEST PARTS ABOUT TRAVELING WITH FAMILY? WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED AS A RESULT?
“When traveling with kids you really need to adjust your expectations of what can get done in a day! We suavely pick one small outing in the morning, head home for a rest/sleep then head out again in the evening. It is slower with kids but it also opens up a whole new world of people you will meet as kids are such great icebreakers.”
HOW HAS TRAVELING BROUGHT YOU CLOSER TOGETHER?
“Traveling tests us and challenges us. We love the excitement of planning a trip and researching then actually getting there and exploring! It really does create great memories and great stories to share for years and years to come.”
The Smiths are truly inspiring; sharing amazing adventures with their beautiful family and also sharing their adventures with the rest of the world. Follow their epic journeys on their blog or Facebook page. They encourage everyone to follow their footsteps by leaving our comfort zones and stepping into parts of the world we haven’t seen before.
